One section many test-takers find challenging is Writing Task 2: The Survey Response. However, with the right approach, you can tackle it confidently. In this guide, we will walk you through what to expect, how to craft an effective response, and provide real examples.

Understanding Writing Task 2

In this part of the CELPIP exam, you’ll respond to a survey question by choosing between two options. Your task is to:

  1. Select the option you prefer

  2. Explain your reasoning

  3. Write 150–200 words

  4. Complete your response within 26 minutes

You will be given two options for the survey, but you'll need to choose and support only one!

Example Prompt:

Your local community center is organizing a large summer event aimed at bringing residents together and supporting local talent. The planning committee has narrowed it down to two options and is asking all residents to vote and provide feedback.

Which event would you prefer for this year's summer celebration?

Option A: An outdoor music festival featuring live performances by local bands.

Option B: A food and craft fair showcasing local artisans, handmade goods, and a variety of food vendors offering samples and meals.

Choose the option you would prefer and explain your reasons. Use specific examples and personal experience, if possible, to support your response.

Suggested Structure for Your Response

To keep your writing clear and organized, follow this simple structure:

1. Thank the reader

Begin by thanking the reader if, according to the task, it is someone you would know in that context. For example, if the survey is conducted by your office manager, you should thank them since in real life, you would clearly know your office manager. However, if the survey is conducted by, for instance, the City of Vancouver, then you would not know the person in charge. Therefore, thanking them is unnecessary, but it is still OK if you want to do so.

2. State Your Preference Clearly

Write a sentence that states your choice clearly. For example, in the sample task given above, if you were to choose Option B, then write it again in your own words (we call this paraphrasing). A good version of this could be 'I strongly believe that a food and craft fair would provide the most enjoyment for all those in attendance.' If you read this sentence, you can clearly see that is matches the information in Option A and not Option B. That is exactly what you are supposed to do. Also, notice that it is not a full 3-line paragraph, but just one sentence. Leave your reasons, explanations and examples for the body paragraphs.

Here is another example if we were to choose Option A:

I would like the event to host musicians rather than gastronomical and artisanal options.

3. Provide Supporting Reasons

Offer reasons in two to three paragraphs, using real or hypothetical examples.

Example Paragraphs:

First of all, a food and craft fair fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone in the community. At similar events, people of all ages find enjoyment: kids engage in crafts, older adults browse handmade items, and families try homemade snacks and admire local artwork. It feels like a celebration of the community.

Additionally, these events provide crucial support to local businesses and artists, tripling the representation of local musicians. A friend who sells handmade pottery participates in such fairs and emphasizes their importance for income, networking, and customer base building. Buying local goods means investing in the community and sustaining our economy. It is also noteworthy that unlike music performers, other artists do not receive financial aid from our government.

Furthermore, the relaxed, open setting of a fair encourages meaningful interaction. Different from a music festival, where everyone is focused on the stage, a fair allows people to wander, chat, and engage at their own pace. I find that it’s easier to strike up conversations and really enjoy the company of others in that kind of atmosphere.

3. Conclude Your Response With A Statement

A good conclusive statement brings a new result, product of your reasons combined.

Example:

I am convinced a food and crafts festival promotes ideals such as connection, creativity, and community support, which are elements especially needed after the recent pandemic.

Common topics include work benefits, community events and city planning

Top Tips for Success

Tip

Why It Matters

Pick ONE option and avoid mentioning positives of other choice

You want to focus on your choice. However, discussing the negatives of the other choice is perfectly fine

Use transition words

Words like first, also, finally separate your ideas clearly.

Write within the word limit (150-200)

180–200 words is ideal.

Be polite and professional

You are usually writing to your boss, a community organizer or a government agency. Do not get emotional, instead provide the facts of your situation.

Final Thoughts: You’re on the Right Track

Writing Task 2 doesn’t have to be intimidating. By choosing one option, using clear and concise language, and following the structure outlined above, you'll be well-prepared to succeed.

Keep practicing, seek constructive feedback, and don’t hesitate to get additional support. The more you write, the more confident and effective you’ll become.
